Origin of the Shihsanhang Name

There are three stories revolving the origin of the name, Shihsanhang (the 13th site). The first one has it that there were 13 stores in the area at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. The second story has it that most Han people who came to Taiwan at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty were single males, also labeled “vagabonds” by the locals (Lô-hàn-kha-á.) There were 13 of them at the time, and the pronunciation for “13 people” in the Taiwanese dialect resembles that of “Shihsanhang.” The third story has it that the aboriginals called this place “Shihsanhang,” and the Han people retrained the pronunciation of the name. Following archeological practice, the site is named with the shortest name of the area, thus the name Shihsanhang.
